Overview

The Kriegsmarine is the military branch incorporating all interstellar naval forces (outside of the control of the Waffen-SS), orbital defence forces and marine forces within the Greater German Reich.

Founded

The Kriegsmarine was founded in 1935 from the Reichsmarine, the same year of the signing of Anglo-German Naval Agreement of 18 June, 1935. Having not always shined the naval branches influence was next to nothing in the planning stages of the Reich in its early push into space. The Luftwaffe had gained ground developing the rockets and ships that would first take the German people into space. After the founding of the new capital on Germania, a massive restructuring program of the military branches finally pushed almost all assets of value into the the hands of the Navy. Having been given new life into it's budget the Kriegsmarine set out Plan Tirpitz and has since grown into a formidable military power within human space.

Modernization

Plan Tirpitz

The Plan Tirpitz is the naval construction program blueprint for the future of the Kriegsmarine.

Formations

Each Kriegsmarine unit is highly versatile, most of the higher formations featuring combined arms capabilities.

Sector Command

Sector Commands are largely administrations for overseeing the logistics and strategic command of attached Battle Fleets. A Sector Command can spread over dozens of worlds whilst commanded by a Admiral or Generaladmiral.

Battle Fleet

Battle Fleets are permenant commands controlling significant resources to conduct campaigns and even wars on their own. The principle fighting formation of the Kriegsmarine, Battle Fleets control four Fleet Wings on average, under the command of a Admiral.

Fleet Wing

A Fleet Wing consists of two or more Flotillas for administrative purposes, whilst each attending Squadron is placed under the command of the Fleet Wing's commanding officer - a Vizeadmiral or a Konteradmiral.

Flotilla

A German Flotilla is commanded by an Flottillenadmiral, and can number from two squadrons to include a total of fifty warships in total, of varying tonnage and class. Flotillas are largely administrative commands over Squadrons and the myriad of logistical and support units that supply them.

Schwadron

A Kriegsmarine Schwadron (English: Squadron) operates from four to twenty-two ships, commanded by a Kommodore. Depending upon a squadron's tactical doctrine and mission, can range from multipurpose squadrons to type-specific units of warships.

Ship Command

A German Ship Command is the entire command structure of a warship from the size of a corvette to the largest capital ship. This is the lowest command in Kriegsmarine, enabling greater autonomy for deep space patrols and commerce raiding. Due to the diversity of ranks within the Kriegsmarine, a Ship Command can be commanded Korvettenkapitän to an Admiral.
